I saw this neato magazine in the waiting room at the physical therapy place last week.  It’s called Reminisce Magazine and it’s all about the good ol’ days, articles about being a kid in the 1940’s, photos of strange, no-longer-used items, lots of photos of people.  I was happy to find the magazine yesteray at Books A Million and picked up a copy.  There are so many neat things in there to draw.  This spoon I drew was a photo sent in by a reader for this section of the magaizine where you send in a photo and description of an item if you don’t know what it is or what it was used for, in hopes that someone will write in and fill you in.  This twisted spoon caught my eye.  Until someone writes in w/ an answer (IF anyone does) I can’t tell you what it was used for! :)   I like this drawing a lot and may do it again, but spend more time on it.  This was a quick sketch, I did two sketches in the Books A Million cafe yesterday.  Looking at the EDM list, I see it qualifies for "spoon" (#94), "something antique (#21) and "something metallic" (#32).  Oh, and this was done in my new Lama Li sketchbook that I had bought at the same time.

Hi!  During a Saturday Night meeting I drew "something round" for an EDM challenge, #117.  It’s the lip balm from my purse.  I drew it in my moleskine. :)

I recently drew my sunglasses in my moleskine for an EDM challenge while sitting at Subway.  Today I was there again and so I took a cameraphone photo of the glasses so that you can see what they are like.  It’s a neoprene (foam) visor that just slips onto any pair of glasses.  I got it from REI.com but they no longer sell them.  Also, I drew them kinda wonky, and I wanted to show why I did that.  The drawing IS wonky, but my  brain was seeing the front of one lens and the back of the other lens and I just didn’t get the lines lined up so that’s why they look twisted.

I did EDM #11, Sunglasses, today.  I drew it in my moleskine while at Subway, after finishing my sub and waiting for my physical therapy appointment.  Now that I look at it on the computer, the lenses look wonky, kinda twisted, but I KNOW that is what I SAW when I drew it.  I remeber thinking when I drew it that it seemed funny, but that’s exactly what I saw.  Idunno.  These sunglasses have a slip-on sun visor.  I got that visor at rei.com YEARS ago, it was the first item I ever purchased via the internet.  That sunglass visor is the best thing!

Ok, well I finished one of the many things I am working on. It’s a drawing of my Paul Frank monkey watch that I did using ArtRage2 on my Wacom Graphire drawing tablet.  This for Everyday Matters challenge #8; "Draw your watch or other piece of jewelry".  Actually, I did most of this drawing using ArtRage2 on my tablet laptop with the touchscreen (Fujitsu P1510) so that it was like virtual drawing, and then finished it off on the Wacom tablet connected to my main computer.

EDITED TO ADD: I wanted to say THANKS SO MUCH to all of you who comment here on my blog, it really gives me a lift and inspiration!  Hugs to you all!  :) :)

I’m really happy with this.  I finally got away from coloring my drawings in so hard, I’d just press SO HARD and then there’d be no definition, no depth, no vasriations in "value".  I didn’t have anything intereting in my kitchen so I found this jar online and changed it a bit.

For some reason the scan looks "dirty" to me, like my drawing is messy.  Maybe it is.  I just look at it in my sketchbook and feel very pleased with it  But the scan… idunno.  I tried taking a photo of it but unless the camera is perfectly centered and angled perfectly it looks like I drew it askew.

I recently drew my "favorite item" which is EDM challenge #6 ("everyday matters"), a "toothy toad" hinged storage box I got off ebay several years ago.  The first try is here.  I was unhappy w/ it, so I wanted to do it again, but to improve my eye, I wanted to try doing pieces of it.  EDM link 1, link 2.   So tonight I finished this:

I decided to do EDM #5, Draw Your Bed.  I wanted to sit ON my bed, so this is my view from ON the bed.  That’s not the headboard, that’s a sideboard that goes only partially down the sides (it’s a trundle bed opened up).  The Pug decided to sit in and so he got in the picture.  I really have a hard time drawing people/animals from life.  I prefer drawing animals from photos

EDITED TO ADD: This is the first drawing in a long time that was not drawn in my moleskine. I bought a Mead Academie sketchbook to try. It’s not as portable as my Moleskine, but I just wanted to try some different paper.

EDITED TO ADD:  What I saw while drawing last night…  :) :)

I just drew this and colored it w/ colored pencils.  I’m not happy w/ it.  For one, I just drew it sorta wrong.  Then as usual, as soon as I start coloring it w/ colored pencils, I’m unhappy w/ it.  Then, when I was done, I scanned it, the scan never shows what I see.  Then I look again, and I think it’s too 2-dimensional.  I’m really not happy w/ it.  But I love this toothy-toad.  It’s a little hinged box you can keep stuff in.  I was sorta thinking of it as my EDM #6 "draw your favorite or well-loved object, or childhood toy".  Idunno.  I’m tired and cranky and don’t feel good.  So I’m gonna go to bed and think about this tomorrow.  Oh, this is the object, by the way.

I emailed the list of EDM challenges to my phone… and also the latest Illustration Friday theme… so that I’d have the list anywhere I go.

I did EDM #2, today, Draw A Lamp.  I’m doing EDM from the beginning but not necessarily in order- my intention is to do it in order from #1 on, but, for example, at a recent meeting I was at, there were no lamps in the room, so I drew my wallet and my cup which are #3 and #4.  Oh man I’m tired, I gotta go to bed.  4:12am (my blog timestamp is off).  EDITED TO ADD: The little cartoon cursing in the upper corner is from this post, where the scanner ate my moleskine.  :)

The book I ordered arrived today:

The Creative License: Giving Yourself Permission to be the Artist You Truly Are, by Danny Gregory, the guy who started the whole "Everyday Matters" drawing challenge and group.  :)   Can’t wait to read it!

I was at a 4 hour meeting tonight (that was actually a lot of fun) but I like to do something w/ my hands while I listen, and drawing is great because I don’t miss a thing said, but I don’t feel fidgety.  I loaded up the EDM list of challenges and looked for things in the meeting.  So I did my Wallet and my drink Cup.  Here’s the Wallet.
