I’m really happy with this. I finally got away from coloring my drawings in so hard, I’d just press SO HARD and then there’d be no definition, no depth, no vasriations in "value". I didn’t have anything intereting in my kitchen so I found this jar online and changed it a bit.
For some reason the scan looks "dirty" to me, like my drawing is messy. Maybe it is. I just look at it in my sketchbook and feel very pleased with it But the scan… idunno. I tried taking a photo of it but unless the camera is perfectly centered and angled perfectly it looks like I drew it askew.

That’s very nicely done Lauren, and I love the colours of the jar. The sketch doesn’t look dirty to me, but maybe that’s because I don’t have the original to compare it to. But I think it looks great!

You really did achieve some depth and variations in this drawing. Nicely done.

Great drawing! I like the way you’ve used color in this!

scanners often pick up information ( light) in a broken way, as well as picking up a very close range view of the piece of paper.
So…you aren’t imagining things.
It’s one reason I almost never scan finished work.
As for the camera issue…try a program like picassa and the straightening feature they have for post processing your photos. It might be what you need.
You might also try putting the pic on the floor and standing directly over it ( watch the feet and shadows of your body..they like to sneak into the photo)Center your camera over the work and squat as close as you can and take the photo.
Digital cameras with the LCD preview are a big help.

And yes…with colred pencil, you want to use many light layers. Take a look at http://www.glassgems.net/scribble/ for oodles of info on CP and using them effectivly…lots of general art info and color info there too.
Not trying to be a “know-it-all” just trying to help, because I went through all this the hard way, as a self taught artist.
